Charted: The Happiest Countries in the World 2025
Finland is the happiest country in the world, according to the latest World Happiness Report. It’s the eighth consecutive year the Nordic country has topped the list. Following Finland are fellow Nordic countries Denmark, Iceland, and Sweden. The Netherlands rounds out the top five.
Housing starts signal demand for labor, materials, appliances, home furnishings, and mortgages, making them a key economic indicator. In 2024, housing starts in Canada rose 2% from 2023 to 245,367 units.
In 2023, the United States imported 3.8 million barrels per day from Canada, representing about 60% of the total crude oil it imported that year. Between 2013 and 2023, Canada’s share of the United State’s total crude oil increased by 33% from 2.57 million barrels per day to 3.8 million barrels per day.
In 2023, Canada’s GDP was $2.38 trillion, up about $40 billion or 1.2% from $2.34 trillion in 2022. Among the provinces, Ontario's real GDP reached $932 billion, accounting for almost 40% of Canada's total economic output.

The Northwest Territories spent more on healthcare per person in 2022 than any other region of Canada. Total healthcare spending in the territory that year reached $22,474.79 per person, nearly $14,000 more than the national average. Among provinces, Newfoundland and Labrador had the highest healthcare spending per capita while Ontario had the lowest.
Giving birth accounted for 344,811 or 11.3% of the 3.06 million inpatient hospitalizations in 2023-2024, making it the top reason for being admitted to a hospital for acute care that year. It was followed by COPD and bronchitis and heart failure, which made up 2.5% and 2.3% of total acute inpatient hospitalizations.
Health care is one of the most significant expenditures in Canada, accounting for 12% of the national GDP in 2022. Total health care spending in Canada reached $336 billion, or $8,645 per person, in 2022. Hospital care was the top expense, accounting for 25% of all health care spending.
Quebec had the highest life expectancy in 2023 at 82.55 years, followed by Ontario (82.33 years) and British Columbia (81.95 years). All three exceeded the national average. In contrast, Manitoba (79.1 years), Newfoundland and Labrador (79.11 years), and Saskatchewan (78.99 years) had the lowest life expectancy.

The 2022/2023 academic year saw a record high of 2,211,345 students enrolled in Canadian public post-secondary institutions. International students accounted for over one-fifth (21.6%) of the total enrollment.
More Canadians are living alone than ever before. In 2021, approximately 4.4 million Canadians, roughly 15% of the population over the age of 15, lived alone. That is up 6.1% from 2016. Quebec leads the nation in the share of people living alone at 19%, while Nunavut had the least with 8%.
In 2024, Toronto, Ontario's population reached 3,273,119, making it the most populous city in Canada. About 42% of Canadians live in the 20 largest cities in the country.
According to Statistics Canada, the number of people living in Canada is estimated to have reached 41,288,599 people on July 1, 2024, up 3% or an increase of 1,205,115 people compared to the same period in the year prior.

Tax data from 2022 shows that the top 1% of earners had an income of at least $283,200, a 4.3% increase from $271,300 in 2021. Their average income was $586,900. This group earned 10.2% of all income in Canada and paid 22.1% of all income taxes.
